Chameleon Detect is a fully autonomous detection system. It can autonomously monitor every person who enters your building, scanning for explosive canisters and instantly alerting you if one is detected.

If such a process were to be undertaken through human operation, this level of 24 hour a day, 365 day a year monitoring would be both expensive and less effective due to human error. Chameleon Detect helps to ensure that those in your duty of care will not fall victim to others bringing prohibited items into the building – identifying the dangers arriving at your door and alerting you before it’s too late.

The Backstory

The events of Grenfell Tower in 2017 served as a harrowing reminder of a long-running failure in public works. We often only take safety seriously in the aftermath of a disaster. The tragedy at Grenfell harks back to what occurred in 1968 at Ronan Point. A small gas explosion in a flat led to the partial collapse of a brand-new London high-rise. Unfortunately, this also resulted in the death of four individuals.

Over fifty years on from Ronan Point, ensuring that LPS buildings remain safe for those living in and around them is still a regulatory and operational challenge. Though regular inspections and improved mechanical interventions have become commonplace; ensuring that no gas, oxygen, or petrol containers can enter buildings remains a marked challenge.

Case Study: NG Homes

Chameleon Detect has been used to great effect in Springburn, Glasgow. The system has been calibrated to detect tenants bringing canisters of gas, fuel, or oxygen into the 25-storey tower block. Given the wide-angle lens of Chameleon Detect, the system can observe the entire lobby, including both entrances, whilst remaining stationary.

Having identified the prohibited item, the Detect system follows its assigned and customisable response protocol. In this application, Chameleon Detect seamlessly integrates with the door entry system. This enables identification of the flat that provided access, or the key fob which was used to gain access. Then, the assigned ‘response’ team member is notified of the threat. The NG Homes staff member can then follow up on the notification, and ask the tenant to remove the canister from the building before others are put at risk.

Customisable Features

Chameleon Detect can be fully customised with a bespoke incident response protocol. In the Springburn Case Study, our client required a silent alert. Therefore, Detect was programmed to only send alerts directly to assigned staff’s mobile phones and laptops.

However, the system can also be calibrated to be fully autonomous. It can also warn individuals with an audible pre-recorded message that plays when a prohibited item is detected. In instances where you would like a blended approach, the camera system can enable two-way communication. This can be fed between the building manager and the individual carrying a prohibited item.
